In the early 2000's I came across a business idea while I was working a low paying job. The investment to start the company was minimal but did require quite a bit of my time but also required continued investment from what I was earning working for someone else. I figured lets start slow, money was really tight and every penny counted. I really couldn't afford to hire an attorney to start my LLC and I really didn't know how to start one in the first place.
So I began to ask my father who was an independent business owner at the time. He told me that when forming a business you must fill out forms at the Secretary of State website (called articles of organization/formation) and once you answer all of the questions you can create your own LLC for a small state filing fee and it would only take a few minutes online.
How to find the Secretary of State
FYI google will use the acronym sos and knows it means Secretary of State.
- google "SOS and your State where you want to form the LLC"
- Example: SOS Texas
- Example: SOS Delaware
- Example: SOS Florida
This will take you to the Secretary of State's website of the State where you want to form your LLC and you can then search for the Articles of Organization/Formation. Most Secretary of State websites will allow you to form your own LLC online and the process only takes a few minutes.
Some Secretary of State websites are still a little out dated lets say Delaware, on their website you can fill in a PDF file and then mail inArticles of Formation. Your LLC will only take a few weeks to form and the SOS will mail back your Articles.
Next step would be to go to irs.gov and to apply for an EIN (tax id) for the company. A lawyer would have charged me $1200.00 for what took me 15 minutes to do. (I think my filing fee at the time was $100.00).
Forming your own LLC will only take minutes.
